'I’m busting him up!' Dwight Howard remains unfazed by Victor Wembanyama’s potential as he confidently picks himself over Wemby in his prime

The first overall pick Victor Wembanyama had a fantastic debut year. The star impressed the NBA community with his incredible defense for the San Antonio Spurs. The 20-year-old is already getting compared to the best centers in NBA history including veteran Dwight Howard . However, Howard himself disagrees with the comparisons.

The former Los Angeles Lakers star Dwight Howard recently sang high praise of the Spurs rookie while appearing on the OGs Show. As Howard is considered one of the best defenders in the league, the host Mike Miller asked who would win in a matchup between the center and Victor Wembanyama. Howard admitted the battle would be a tough one but confidently chose himself to win.

I'm gonna go with myself. I'm busting Wemby up in the paint. What are you talking about. Dwight Howard said

Wemby’s biggest advantage is his 7’4 height which allows him to block shots and score by reaching the rim without much effort. However, the rookie is not considered the traditional big man of basketball. Howard on the other hand, despite not being as tall as Wemby, has power in his game. The 38-year-old defense-wise can be physically more dominant making it hard for Wemby to move past him and score.

Regardless of Howard’s thoughts on the one-on-one with Wembanyama, the star expressed admiration for the young star. The three-time DPOY winner called the Spurs center his favorite player at the moment. Witnessing a battle between the two would certainly be a treat for the followers of the game.

Dwight Howard wanted Victor Wembanyama to win 2024 DPOY

On Wednesday, the league announced the winner of the Defensive Player of the Year award. The Minnesota Timberwolves Rudy Gobert took the trophy leaving Wembanyama as the runner-up. After witnessing Wemby’s dominance on the court throughout the season many were upset by the final decision including Howard.

Despite Howard having Wemby for the DPOY win, the star was a great sport and congratulated Gobert on the 4th win. Howard on X also encouraged Gobert to win the fifth one and a championship this year.

Either way it’s a W for France! I had Wemby winning but I love to see Gobert win another! I like to see history being made and greatness being achieved. Dwight Howard wrote

Statistically, Wemby had a better performance than Gobert this year. However, this year was just the beginning of the San Antonio Spurs rookie’s career. The center will certainly get more chances to win in the future as he is only improving each time.
