Brooklyn Nets: Offseason Needs for 2024
Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

ESPN recently spoke about offseason needs for all the eliminated teams in the NBA, including the Brooklyn Nets.

It was a tough 2023-24 season for the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets finished in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with a 32-50 record, as they completed their first full season after dismantling the trio of James Harden, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Durant.

For Brooklyn, their failures once again to create a big 3 or a superteam have left the roster in a weird position. In this coming draft, the Nets currently do not have any picks. While that can change leading up to the draft, Brooklyn would have liked to have their selections after a poor season.

Recently, ESPN spoke about the offseason needs and the team’s current state. Here’s what they had to say.

State of the roster: While Brooklyn returns 11 players from the current roster, has the fifth-most tradable first-round picks of any team in the next seven years, and possesses cap flexibility in the future and trade exceptions to absorb salary, the Nets are searching for an identity, stuck somewhere between a rebuild and a retool.

As mentioned by ESPN, the Nets do feel like they are in a strange place. Due to a lot of trades, the Nets do have some draft capital in the future, but those are assets that they could certainly use now.

In the trade centered around Durant, the Nets did bring back a very good player in Mikal Bridges, but it feels like they are closer to a rebuild than just a simple retool. While they do have cap space, Brooklyn doesn’t appear to be the most desirable destination as of now for free agents.

As we head into the summer, the Nets will be an intriguing team to follow. If they decide to move on from Bridges, they could get a lot of draft picks back. However, they could also elect to try and build around him, but that will likely take more than just one offseason.
